Artificial Insemination through IUI, Ovulation Induction using Fertility Drugs — Plano, Dallas

At his practice, Dr. James Douglas provides a variety of infertility treatments, including artificial insemination through IUI and ovulation induction using fertility drugs, to his Plano- and Dallas-area patients. He uses the latest techniques and technology to help individuals and couples suffering from male and female factor infertility to realize their dreams of becoming parents.

Artificial Insemination through IUI

Our practice offers artificial insemination treatment through intrauterine insemination (IUI) to Plano- and Dallas-area patients. Artificial insemination through IUI is a sophisticated procedure that involves depositing healthy sperm directly into the uterus, rather than having it travel from the cervix to the fallopian tubes. This allows for a higher pregnancy success rate. Dr. Douglas uses highly advanced techniques and technology to provide patients with the most successful results possible after their artificial insemination treatment through IUI.

Who Needs IUI?

When combined with ovulation induction using fertility drugs, artificial insemination through IUI at our Plano practice near Dallas is a highly effective treatment option for those experiencing irregular ovulation, cervical mucus problems, endometriosis, or unexplained infertility. In addition, IUI is often used as the first line of treatment for mild male factor infertility. In vitro fertilization using ICSI is used for more severe cases of male infertility.

The IUI Process

During the artificial intrauterine insemination process at our Plano office, the woman is placed on fertility drugs to help her produce multiple eggs. Once the eggs are mature, the male partner provides a semen sample, which is washed and prepared so that only healthy sperm are left. The concentrated sperm sample is then transferred into the uterus using a small, flexible catheter. Because the sperm is concentrated, there is a higher likelihood that the sperm will travel to the fallopian tubes to fertilize an egg.  The entire procedure takes a few minutes to complete, and patients can return to their normal routine following treatment.

Ovulation Induction

Ovulation induction at our Plano office is beneficial for women who are experiencing ovulation dysfunction or who have polycystic ovarian syndrome. The goal of ovulation induction is to create predictable ovulation cycles for these women, which effectively increases fertility. Ovulation induction is often combined with other fertility treatments such as IUI or in vitro fertilization to maximize the chances of conception.

Fertility Drugs used for Ovulation Induction

We offer a variety of fertility drugs for ovulation induction at our Dallas-area practice in Plano to help address the specific infertility needs of our patients. Dr. Douglas can determine which course of hormone therapy is best for you after conducting a series of fertility tests.

Progesterone

Progesterone, a hormone that occurs naturally in the body, plays a very important role in a woman's ability to become pregnant. Women who do not produce enough of this hormone may be prescribed supplemental progesterone to help regulate the menstrual cycle and increase the likelihood of a successful implantation. Progesterone can be taken orally, through suppositories, or by injection.

Clomiphene Citrate

Clomiphene citrate is usually the first line of treatment for women who turn to fertility drugs for ovulation induction, and has been used for decades to treat irregular ovulation, anovulation (the complete absence of ovulation), and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Clomiphene citrate increases the levels of follicle stimulating hormones (FSH) and luteinizing hormones (LH) to regulate ovulation and fertility, improving the chances of conception. Clomiphene citrate is taken orally. If Clomiphene citrate therapy is unsuccessful, Dr. Douglas will initiate therapy using gonadotropins.

Gonadotropins

Gonadotropins are another group of fertility drugs offered at our Dallas-area practice that contain high concentrations of FSH and LH. FSH and LH stimulate the ovaries to make multiple eggs, which increases the chances of pregnancy during other forms of treatment, such as in vitro fertilization or IUI. Gonadotropins are taken by injection.

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin

Human chorionic gonadotropin is another form of fertility drugs therapy to induce ovulation. This medication is usually combined with clomiphene citrate or gonadotropin therapy, as well as with IUI at our Dallas-area practice to help time the release of eggs to coincide with the ejaculation or transfer of sperm into the body. This helps to increase the chances of conception.

Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone Agonists

Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists are prescribed for treatment of endometriosis as well as for ovulation induction. These fertility drugs control the production of LH and FSH in the body, thereby reducing estrogen levels. Our practice provides Lupron™ as a preferred GnRH agonist, which is taken by injection and is usually prescribed in conjunction with IVF treatment.

Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone Antagonists

GnRH antagonists work in a similar way as GnRH agonists by controlling the amount of LH and FSH released by the body. This allows for greater precision when it comes to egg retrieval or during other procedures such as IUI. The key difference between GnRH agonists and antagonists is that the latter is taken for a shorter amount of time. Our practice provides GnRH antagonists in the form of Antagon™ and Cetrotide™ injections.

Metformin®

Metformin® is a drug given to diabetes patients and those suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome to help regulate the amount of insulin and androgens, or male hormones, produced by the body. The production of androgens is important for egg maturation and regular ovulation, but excessive amounts are quite detrimental to one's fertility. By regulating the amount of androgens in the body, regular ovulation and fertility are restored.
